Died of pneumonia after taking one of his brothers to a race and returning home in the rain.

Mac and Fanny Wilhoite had 2 houses, still standing opposite the courthouse in Charlottesville. They lived in one while the children and Mrs. Stith lived in the other. At teatime the children were scrubbed up and taken to their parents for tea - always on very good behavior. Much of their education was supervised by Mrs. Stith, who had been a schoolteacher. (This explains why her daughter Fanny was so learned in botany and knew the Latin names of all the local plants.) All of them were intensely musical - sang and played piano.
