I083: Benjamin Franklin RICHCREEK
(6 Aug 1849 - 8 Nov 1917)
- BIRTH: 6 Aug 1849, Coshocton County, Ohio
- DEATH: 8 Nov 1917, Windfall, Indiana
Father: George Washington RICHCREEK
Mother: Elizabeth MANSFIELD
Family 1:
Mary Jane WILKINSON
- Walter Bernard RICHCREEK
As a boy, Benjamin Franklin Richcreek,
came with his family from Coshocton, Ohio to live on a farm
near Paris, Illinois. When he was thirteen years of age, the
Civil War being in progress, he ran away from home and tried
to enlist at the Army Training Camp, near Paris, Ill.
Grand Mother, knowing his wish to enlist, went to camp
and brought him home. He attended school in the winter and
worked on the farm in the summer. When he was nearing
eighteen years of age, having heard that the Union Pacific
Railroad had started building the Railroad, he went to
Bloomington, Ill. to find work.
He found work at once and started working on the
grading of the road. Being an apt young man, he soon learned
to survey, and was made overseer of two hundred men, who
were employed by the company.
For almost five years his work was with the building
of the Union Pacific Railroad. It was in Bloomington, Ill.
that he met his future wife, Mary Jane Wilkinson, a girl of
fourteen, whom he married April I5th, I869. They were the
parents of sixteen children. The first three George, Allen
and James, were born on the prairie, near Springfield,
Ill. In February I876, he brought his family to live in
Remington, Indiana, where the rest of the children were
born.
He was a man skilled in many ways, a man of strong
domestic ties. His sense of justice was unequaled. He was a
Patriotic citizen in every sense of the word. His friends
said of him "his word was as good as his bond" His church
was the Universal Brotherhood of man.
Dedicated to the sacred memory of all that could be
lost in a Husband, A Father, and a Friend.
