SCENES

SITCOM: The Dog Paddles (a lie backfires)

INT. Nicky'S APARTMENT – EVENING

Nicky is in the middle of a phone call.

NICKY

Vanessa, I'd love to go with you and your friends. But I can't swim. Sorry. You know I'd love to see you.

He hangs up just as Lance comes in.

LANCE

Nicky! You know how to swim, right?

NICKY

Sure. Who doesn't know how to swim?

LANCE

Great! I've got a job for you.

NICKY

Good thing. I' running out of ramen.

LANCE

That's what you get for quitting your last job.

NICKY

But I had another one lined up, working at home.

LANCE

I thought you were going to be a mystery shopper.

NICKY

Nah. That was a different email. It looked like a scam.

LANCE

So you didn't fall for it?

NICKY

Of course not. How gullible do you think I am? I bought the Work at Home kit instead.

LANCE

Well, yeah. That's much smarter.

NICKY

Right? Only it got lost in the mail.

LANCE

Funny how that happens.

NICKY

So, what's the job?

LANCE

Swimming waiter.

NICKY

Huh?

LANCE

You swim around this huge pool with a floating tray, serving drinks to people on floats.

NICKY

That sounds stupid.

LANCE

It can pay your rent in two days.

NICKY

It's a brilliant idea. I love it.

LANCE

You know Vanessa, right?

NICKY

Uh. A little.

LANCE

Didn't you spend the night with her?

NICKY

Yeah, that's her.

LANCE

Oh right! Is she the one who keeps calling to ask you out?

NICKY

Also her.

LANCE

It's her brother's place.

NICKY

Oh.

LANCE

That's not going to be a problem, is it?

NICKY

Problem? Nah. Why should it be a problem?
